The City

History of Pontal do Paraná

Like the rest of the Paraná coast, Pontal do Paraná was originally inhabited by indigenous communities, and it was only in 1951 that the city's area was donated by the State Government to the municipality of Paranaguá.
From 1980 onwards, three large companies set up operations and attracted more than 3,000 workers to the area, who stayed in the region. Around the same time, the Marine Biology Center (CBM) and the Center for Marine Studies of the Federal University of Paraná (CEM-UFPR) were created. Starting in 1987, the population began to call for the region's emancipation to form a new municipality. The residents' demand was finally met and, through Law No. 11,252 of December 20, 1995, the region was officially separated and became an independent city, today's Pontal do Paraná.
